Hardship To Hope: Building LA’s First Vegan Food Bank with Gwenna Hunter, Vegans of LA Food Bank
From Personal Awakening to Community Impact: Why Gwenna Hunter’s Story Still Matters
Some stories don’t just inspire you once. They stay with you.
That’s exactly why we’re bringing back one of the most listened-to episodes of The Wild Party Podcast, featuring Gwenna Hunter, founder of Vegans of LA Food Bank. The response to this conversation was clear. You want more stories about vegan food, accessibility, and real impact. Gwenna’s journey delivers all of that, and more.
A Moment That Changed Everything
Gwenna’s path to veganism didn’t happen overnight. It began in 2008 with a shift toward vegetarianism, sparked by a 28-day fast that revealed how much better her body could feel without animal products.
But the true turning point came years later.
In 2016, Gwenna experienced a vivid, emotional dream where she felt a deep connection to a cow. It was not just symbolic, it was transformational. In that moment, she recognized the emotional lives of animals in a way she had never fully understood before.
That experience became her catalyst.
She made the decision to fully embrace a vegan lifestyle, grounded not just in health, but in compassion.
Turning Struggle Into Service
Gwenna’s mission was also shaped by her own lived experiences with poverty and food insecurity in Los Angeles.
She understood firsthand that food is not just fuel, it is survival. And more importantly, it can be a powerful expression of care and dignity.
Without a clear roadmap, she followed a simple belief: start where you are and trust the process.
Through a connection with Pastor Sonny at USC, Gwenna gained access to the essential resources she needed, including refrigeration and transportation. What began as an idea quickly became something much bigger.
The Vegans of LA Food Bank was born.
Redefining What a Food Bank Can Be
Today, the Vegans of LA Food Bank serves approximately 400 people every third Thursday of the month.
But what makes this food bank different goes beyond the plant-based offerings.
Gwenna has created a space where people can choose their own food. That simple shift restores dignity and gives individuals a sense of control during difficult times.
The food itself is intentionally nourishing, with fresh produce like kale, cabbage, potatoes, and rice forming the foundation. Gwenna believes that access to healthy, plant-based food can support both physical and emotional well-being.
This is not just about feeding people. It is about empowering them.
Building Through Community and Persistence
Running a food bank comes with constant challenges, especially when it comes to sourcing fresh, high-quality food.
Gwenna has built a network of partners, including What’s Good Produce, Food Finders, and Food Forward, to help supply the food bank. Still, the unpredictability of food rescue means she must consistently fundraise to ensure quality and consistency.
One of the most powerful lessons she shares is simple but often overlooked.
Ask for help.
From cold emails to unexpected donors, Gwenna has learned that support often shows up when you are willing to seek it.
A New Definition of Success
Gwenna’s definition of success has evolved.
It is no longer about financial milestones or external recognition. Instead, it is about quality of life. It is about rest, happiness, and building a mission that can grow beyond her.
As she looks to the future, her focus is on expanding her team and increasing her reach, so more people can access nourishing, plant-based food.
